Olentzero (17th December) and the Christmas Market

According to Basque legend, Olentzero is the coalman who lives and makes his coal in the mountains. Just before Christmas each year, he comes down to the towns and villages and hands out logs to the poor to make sure no-one suffers from the cold at Christmas.

Nowadays, Olentzero still comes down – on a pottok (the little wild horse that lives in the Basque Country) – and goes from door to door giving out sweets and treats to the children, who tend to follow him on his round.

For the end-of-year festive period, the Tourist Office is proposing an all-inclusive weekend

The Ham Fair

The fair has existed since the 15th century and represents a great traditional festival.

Match Days
